Here is the story I sent to Make-A-Wish:
"When I was born, I had kidney failure, so on May 1st 1997, I had a kidney transplant at the early age of 3. I was lucky enough to receive a kidney from my mom. For seven years following I was in and out of Seattle Children’s Hospital. For the past 14 years I have lived it, so it’s the only thing I know. People ask me “How do you do it?” My response to these people is, “Well it’s the only thing I have known, to me, I am normal.” Even though it can be hard at times, I’m able to get though it so well because of the support that my family and friends give me.

In June 2011, the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Alaska & Washington, the nonprofit organization that grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy, granted my wish to ride with pro snowboarder Travis Rice. So I thought to myself, I should pay it forward to the Make-A-Wish Foundation and hold a fund raising event to raise money for them. That’s when I came up with a great idea to hold a bowling event at the Narrows Plaza Bowling Alley on March 4th. In my event we will be hold a raffling event. I’m calling it “Make-A-Strike for Make-A-Wish”. All proceeds will be going toward the Make-A-Wish Foundation."

Make-A-Wish Foundation Mission:
“We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.”

thank you in advance!

E
arly in the school year, Emily Meyer's Band Instructor, Julie Allison, asked her band kids  for help raising money for the department due to budget cuts.  Money raised would go for instrument repairs, sheet music, and bow ties for concerts and many other needed things.  Emily came to her mom and asked if she would help her put together a fundraiser.  She came up with "Band Aid" and made covered shoe boxes with brown paper that looked like First Aid Kits.   She made 6 and planned a holiday bake sale and fundraiser for the band and choir Christmas concerts.

Coordinating with Mom and Julie/her teacher, Emily made promo flyers to attach to the concert programs to invite friends and family to donate by attending the bake sale in the lobby, and to donate by putting money into the "Band Aid" boxes which she passed around after the concerts.  This was for the December Band and Choir Christmas concerts this school year. Emily raised $979.00 from this set of 2 holiday concerts! Emily again raised $207.00 from a second set of concerts in the spring.  Total:  $1,186.00!!

Emily is planning to make one more go of it and repeat the bake sale at the upcoming band and choir concerts in June at Goodman. All money was delivered to Scott Mc Daniels, the principal at Goodman, who in turn presented it to Julie Allison, Music Director for her department.

Way to go Emily!  If you have an inspiring community story to share, please email us!
